Pilgrimage site Homol
In solitude amid the nature of the Orlické Mountains stands the baroque pilgrimage complex of Homol, one of the most remarkable spiritual places in the region. The site’s centerpiece is the baroque Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1692 by Countess Theresia Eleonora of Ugarte.
A monumental covered staircase with 153 steps leads to the church, lined with 16 niche chapels symbolizing the rosary. This number was not chosen at random: it reflects a symbolic idea so that pilgrims, as they climb to the church, can pray the rosary. The number of steps corresponds exactly to the number of Hail Marys in the full rosary, including the three introductory Hail Marys, while the number of landings corresponds to the Our Fathers.
The site also includes two chapels from 1703: the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk and the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The ensemble is completed by a charnel house from 1778. The western gate to the cemetery is decorated with two statues of kneeling figures of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Wenceslas. You will find this pilgrimage site near the village of Borovnice, and it is accessible year-round. Below the site, you can use a small parking area.
