Churches and chapels
Discover spiritual sites in the Orlické Mountains and the Podorlicko region
Churches, chapels, and pilgrimage sites are a natural part of the landscape of the Orlické Mountains and the Podorlicko region. You’ll find them on village greens, in town centers, in forests, and along the ridgelines. They are often built in places with fine views, in spots with a unique atmosphere. These are structures that reflect historical development, craftsmanship, and the spiritual dimension of this region. Whether you’re interested in architecture, the stories of these places, or you’re simply looking for a space for quiet contemplation, there is plenty to choose from here.
Pilgrimage site of Dřízna
Near the village of Přepychy, in a quiet valley, lies the pilgrimage site of Dřízna. The site’s main landmark is the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, built in 1889 to a design by chaplain Alois Mádr. The grounds include a Way of the Cross with fourteen stations, ending at the Holy Sepulchre carved into the rock. In the valley there is also the forest spring Křížovka, whose water is considered healing. The place offers a peaceful setting for spiritual reflection as well as relaxation in nature.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Neratov is a unique pilgrimage site that, after years of decay, has been transformed into a vibrant center of spiritual and community life. The Baroque church, built in 1723–1733, was severely damaged at the end of World War II and left abandoned for a long time. Thanks to the efforts of the Neratov Association and the local parish, the church was saved and today is known for its unique glass roof, which symbolizes openness and hope.
Kunštát Chapel
Kunštát Chapel is located on the peaks of the Orlické Mountains. At an elevation of 1,035 m above sea level, it is the highest-situated chapel. It was built in 1869 on the site of an older chapel from 1670. It is dedicated to the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. With its mountain character and simplicity, it blends beautifully into the surrounding nature and invites a quiet pause in the middle of a ridge hike.
